  • A Clearer Tax Screen Will Not Reserve Your BV’s Cash

Corporate tax is easier to see, but the real work still sits between profit, payment and cash.

An installation company can finish a strong quarter and still feel poor on Monday morning. The accounts show profit. Two large customers have not paid. Wages, VAT and suppliers are due. Then a corporate tax assessment appears, asking for cash that the company has earned but does not yet hold.

The Belastingdienst now includes provisional, final and additional corporate-income-tax assessments in Overzicht betalen en ontvangen. Paid assessments remain visible for up to two years. Eligible full payments of no more than €50,000 can be made through iDEAL | Wero.

It is a useful digital improvement. It also sharpens a question for every owner-managed BV: does the tax visible on the screen still match the profit, provision and cash inside the company?

    Visibility is not readiness

A corporate tax provision in the accounts is an estimate. An assessment is a claim on cash. The two should speak to each other, yet they often live in different rooms. The bookkeeper maintains the provision, the adviser handles the return, the founder watches the bank, and the assessment waits in the tax portal.

The expanded overview brings the payable amount closer to daily financial management. It gives the owner a clearer view of open assessments and recent payment history. Corporate-tax refunds remain outside that view. The overview therefore works best beside the ledger, the tax file and the cash plan.

The 2026 tax rates have not changed from 2025. Taxable profit up to and including €200,000 is taxed at 19%. Profit above that threshold is taxed at 25.8%. The fresh pressure comes from visibility and timing, rather than from a new headline rate.

Profit and cash keep different calendars

Consider the installation company again. A profitable project may already sit in the accounts while part of the invoice remains unpaid. Late project costs may still arrive. The provisional assessment may reflect an estimate made before the contract was won.

The tax figure, accounting result and bank balance are all real. They simply describe different moments in the life of the business.

A trader can report profit while cash remains tied up in stock. A consultancy can have healthy margins and slow-paying clients. A holding BV may record a taxable event while usable cash sits in another group company. Corporate tax follows the tax position, not the founder’s immediate sense of liquidity.

A 2026 provisional assessment can be requested or changed through Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk, tax software or a fiscal service provider. When the Belastingdienst issues it during the tax year, the company may pay in equal monthly instalments. The full amount must arrive by 31 December.

That makes the provisional assessment a planning tool. Its value depends on whether the estimate still reflects the business that actually developed.

The payment click is not the control

Direct payment reduces friction, but friction can sometimes be useful. Before money leaves the bank, someone still needs to understand which assessment is being paid. They also need to check the amount against the tax records, confirm when it falls due and consider what payment means for the next wage run.

This matters especially in a small BV. One person may open the overview, approve the payment and execute it. A quick route should not blur the difference between checking and paying. Even a correct assessment can produce a poor cash decision when the payment ignores VAT, payroll, essential creditors and expected customer receipts.

Payment processing has its own rhythm. An iDEAL | Wero payment can take up to 48 hours to appear as paid in the overview. For manual transfers, the payment reference remains essential for prompt processing.

The Belastingdienst changed its listed corporate-tax bank account from ING to Rabobank on 1 May 2026. Old beneficiary records deserve attention before they turn into routine mistakes.

Bring tax into the monthly conversation

The strongest use of the overview is not opening it when an assessment becomes urgent. Its real value lies in placing the amount beside the current profit forecast, corporate-tax provision and cash plan. That comparison can bring a stale provisional estimate, an unexplained difference or an unreconciled payment into view.

For calendar-year taxpayers, timing also affects tax interest. Corporate-tax interest is 5% from 1 January 2026. Interest may arise when the Belastingdienst receives the return on or after 1 June following the tax year. It may also arise when the assessment differs from the filed return. Different timing applies to non-calendar financial years.

The discipline is modest. The founder does not need to become a tax specialist. The company does need a clear chain from business result to taxable-profit estimate, provision, assessment, payment reference and bank entry.

Material events deserve a place in that chain before cash is committed elsewhere. An asset sale, a large contract, a loss movement or a group transaction can change the picture quickly.

For the installation company, the lesson is neither to fear the assessment nor celebrate the new payment button. Earned profit, taxable profit and available cash can move at different speeds. The clearer screen helps management see the claim. Regular attention to the numbers helps ensure the company is ready for it.
